Mitchell Park is the center of Palo Alto pickleball, with 15 free public courts, lights until 10 p.m., a paddle-rack rotation, and designated courts for beginners and players arriving alone. The resident club adds weekly clinics, leagues, round robins, and social play without making membership a condition of public court access.

Mitchell Park

Mitchell Park, 600 East Meadow Drive, Palo Alto, CA 94306, has 15 public pickleball courts open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Court access is free and lights extend play after sunset. The large public lot by Mitchell Park Library, 3700 Middlefield Road, is the easiest parking approach to the courts.

How the Rotation Works

Place two paddles in a court's rack to challenge the winners or four paddles to take the court after the current game. Courts are grouped by skill level. Court 9 is beginner-friendly, while Courts 10 and 12 are reserved for players without partners, making Mitchell unusually easy for a visitor to enter alone.

Lessons and Beginner Play

The Palo Alto Pickleball Club runs Getting Started sessions for Palo Alto and East Palo Alto residents and weekly beginner, intermediate, and advanced clinics for members. Annual membership is $30 for Palo Alto and East Palo Alto residents and supports equipment and court improvements. Visitors and nonmembers can still learn through games on beginner Court 9 or connect with an instructor through the Coaches section.

Open Play, Leagues, and Events

All 15 courts operate as daily drop-in courts, so no league enrollment is needed to find a game. Club members also gain access to round robins, DUPR competitions, intramural MiLP, league play, and social events. Mitchell Park hosted the 2026 Bay Area Senior Games qualifier and remains the Peninsula's established venue for age- and skill-based competition.

Visitor Planning

Visitors do not need a club membership or court reservation. Arrive with a paddle, choose the rack matching your level, and use Court 10 or 12 if you do not have a partner. Beginners should start at Court 9. Free parking is available at the Mitchell Park Library lot and on Ensign Way and Nelson Drive; overnight parking is not allowed.
